Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether is an organic compound with the chemical formula C5H12O and is the family of saturated aliphatic ether. At standard temperature and pressure, it was colorless liquid, flammable with 88.15 molecular weight and has melting point of – 9 ° C, boiling point of 53.6-55.2 ° C and vapor pressure of 0.268 bar at a temperature of 20 ° C. MTBE at room temperature, is colorless, flammable, solubility in water and evaporative. Oxygen-containing compounds acted as octane enhancer of gasoline and has the advantage of more complete combustion of fuel and as a result, a significant reduction in exhaust emissions of cars. In some cases, as solver of gallstone was used for medical purposes.

This product includes the combination of four carbon gases contains butane (the cis, trans-2-butene and 1-butene) and butane (isobutane and normal butane) is used in the following cases:

  • As raw materials are used in the production of Olefin units.
  • It is used in the production of MEK.

Shimibaft Company (Private Joint Stock) established in 2002 and the first line of SBA/MEK production with annual capacity of 3,000   put into commercial operation in December 2012.
The production plant is located in Mahshahr Special Economic Petrochemical Zone (Pet Zone) in an area of 5 hectares and using an advanced technology produces finally 5000 Mt/year Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) as a final product and Sec-Butyl Alcohol (SBA) as an intermediate to meet the growing global & local demand and export to the international market.


The SBA/MEK plant used to belong to Chimitexarya Company which was merged into its mother company, Shimibaft, in 2019 to become more profitable and take advantage of the financial performance and product development.

MEK is one of the key organic solvent with fast evaporating rate and excellent solubility which is well-suited for consumption in various industrial applications such as extraction, dilution, purification, cleaning, degreasing, varnish and sticking.
MEK is most used in coating solvent including paints, lacquers, varnishes and thinners.
MEK as a low boiling solvent find broad application in variety of coatings especially paints (such as nitrocellulose, polyurethane, epoxy, acrylic and polyester coating) consumed for automotive paints, home, furniture and metallic surface painting. Also, fast evaporating rate of MEK makes it as a preferred solvent in automotive paints for re-finishing which provides quick drying and strong & durable coating.
MEK along with toluene is used as a de-waxing agent for extraction of paraffin from lube cut.
MEK is also considered as a solvent for solvent-based adhesive. Consumption of MEK as a cement for PVC pipe plumbing is the most well-known application in this sector.
MEK is used as a solvent and cleaning agent for production of stick-on graphics.
MEK can dissolve many resins, polymers and is used as a required solvent for polymerization process of polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and also as a cutting solvent for epoxy & PVC/urethane resin.

Regardless of MEK solvent application, this substance can be used as a starting material for production of MEK peroxide which is useful initiator for unsaturated polyester resin with final application in manufacturing of fiber glass reinforced plastics.
MEK is also the raw material for production of MEK oxime, an anti-skinning agent in paints.
MEK can be consumed as denaturing agent and also as a degreasing of metal surface particularly aircraft parts.

The feedstock 1-butene is contacted with 75% sulfuric acid to produce the Sec-butyl Alcohol. MEK is obtained in high yields at catalytic dehydrogenation of the Sec-butyl alcohol at high temperature.

Secondary Butyl Alcohol (SBA)

  • Sec-Butyl Alcohol, as  an intermediate, is mainly used for production of MEK, however, it can be purified and to be sold separately

SBA is largely consumed for production of MEK. It is also used as a solvent in particular when mixed with aromatic hydrocarbon and is suitable for alkyd resins and ethyl cellulose lacquer. Since SBA can dissolve both water and some oils, it is favored for manufacture of brake fluids and cleaning agent. Also SBA is used in the manufacture of perfume, dyestuffs, fruit essence and wetting agent and broadly consumed as solvent in paints, coatings, resins and adhesives
